We embrace these love impressions as they make our clothes unique, personal and tell a story written by all the makers behind the scenes.

Craft Process

'Kalamkari' is an ancient art form that involves a series of meticulous steps. Even though our collection carries a more conceptual design direction, we have followed and celebrated the traditional and natural ways of going about with the craft technique :

  • The fabric is first treated using milk and myrobalan. The fabric treatment process enables prevention of dyes from smudging and removes starch if any.
  • After this , the fabric is dried in the sun.
  • Natural pigments are made and outlines are done using jaggery and water with a bamboo stick/ date palm stick.
  • The fabric is washed again to remove excess dye and dried in the sun. (here we realize how the craft practice is also dependent on and influenced by weather conditions!)
  • The designs are then colored with sticks (not brushes in the traditional technique! ) using the natural pigments made earlier.
  • Once the pigments dry off naturally, the fabric is again washed to remove excess dye and dried under the sun.
  • That concludes the craft process which takes days to months depending on various conditions. Our Kalamkari workshop uses all the water used in the process to irrigate their farms. Since all materials are natural, there are no chemicals getting discharged, now isn't that something!

Care

  • Gentle hand wash with mild baby shampoo or rock salt and don't soak the garment in water for too long
  • Flat dry in shade
  • Keep a thin muslin on flat garment and iron over it or iron on the reverse side with low heat
  • Keep away from moisture and store in cool dark place
  • No machine wash | No bleach | No detergent

Note : Might notice slight change in color and design as we use natural dyes and all pieces are hand-painted by Kalamkari artisans. We see perfection and beauty in small imperfections!
